My dog has hot spots and dry skin. what should i wash her with. dr said its caused by allergies!?

My dog also gets hot spots caused by allergies. She is actually allergic to flea bites. So we make sure we put bio spot on her every month. We also give her a bath once a week with Veterinary formula oatmeal and tea tree oil shampoo, they sell it at petco and im sure at any major petstore. Also you could ask your vet for an antihistimine pill for your dog. I am really surprised he didnt already prescribe that. It is basically doggie benedryl and it keeps the itching to a minimum. One more thing to try is get dog food with lamb or rice as the main ingredient..it has much more oils in it to help keep the dogs coat moisturized.Hope this helps!

First of all get special foods for dogs with allergies, this is all what i had to do with my dog, also you should ask your doctor what he recommends for washing your dog with
Reply:ask vet. but...if i were to treat it i would put polysporin on it aft er i washed the dog with head and shoulders... it has an anti fungal and moisturizer in it
Reply:Use a medicated shampoo, there are several over the counter hot spot remedies at the pet shop. i think the active ingredient in the remedy is witch hazel.
Reply:Use an oatmeal shampoo, and look for skin and coat conditioners. Check for wheat free dog food in your area, that should help with the allergies, too.
Reply:Try an antibacterial, antiitch shampoo %26amp; use an apple cider vinegar rinse. The vinegar is a healing agent %26amp; will help heal %26amp; sooth the itch.





Mix the vinegar half %26amp; half with water.





It is not a cure but it sooths the dogs skin. You won't see as much scratching. It also helps with the odor.
Reply:Use whatever treatment that vet recommended. I would recommend cleaning the sore(s) every day with an antibacterial soap. My dog has had allergies in the past from misquote bites (which I use advantix to prevent it from happening again) and while she was on antibiotics to treat any infection, I also used Sulfadine ointment to help the sores heal faster then the medication alone would do.

Reply:Was just checking here to see if I could get an answer to my dog's hot spots. His aren't caused by allergies but excessive licking from boredom. I have a vet appt. Monday but wanted to get him some help this weekend. I may see what the pet store has.

A probable cause of the allergies is the food. A lot of dogs can't handle the gluten meal found in most dog foods. Since I switched to a food with NO grain, I have no hot spots.


As for bathing, an oatmeal based shampoo works good.
