Hi, I have small chihuahuas and am currently feeding them on burns minibites throughout the day and a small amount of pedigree favourites for small dogs (pouches) once a day.
The problem I have is that, after giving the meat, one of the dogs begins to shake and i am sure this is an allergy, i have tried many different dog foods and she begins to shake after each one. I also have another dog whose fur has become dry and fluffy.
As far as I was aware burns is one of the best for relieving allergies, but my OH wont allow the dogs to just eat the biscuits as he thinks the tinned meat is important.
My question is, is there anything else, either shop bought or easily home-made, that I can give them instead that will relieve this problem.
Also does anyone think the burns food could be causing the skin allergies of my second dog or have you had problems wth burns foods in the past?

Well normally allergies are related to one or 2 ingredients in the food even the very best food in the world would cause a problem if one ingredient in is triggering the allergy, it can take trial and error to try and find the right food, and some people use diaries in which they record all ingredients in a foods , to try and help them isolate what ingredient may be causing the allergy
Tell your OH that you would like to try skipping the Pedigree, to see if it make a difference, the wheat is it often the cause of allergies ..
Burns is a very good food, but you would need to stop the pedigree first to find out if the ingredients in the current formula of the Burns is the right one for example if your dog allergic to chicken than the then the Burns chicken and Rice would be the wrong food but the fish or duck formula may be okay
The dog that shakes, it is the whole body or is it just his head is bobbing and can he be distracted from the shaking, as it sounds like possibly a seizure.
On this site look at Hypoglycemia and then look at the nutrition (adult diet and supplements) could be related to the pedigree if they are using chemical preservatives

If you are in the UK , most of the foods that everyone is recommending won't be of any help because you cannot buy them there , cooking a homemade diet may be an easiest way to test if you dog is allergic to certain ingredients, some are allergic to rice or corn some are allergic to certain types of meats, so you could use the adult diet in the link above, try using chicken first for a month if things impoves then you would know that some grain was the problem, if problems continue then you know the chicken is the problem so you could try beef or fish or pork instead but only use one meat at a time for a while as it can take a few weeks to see improvement. the page with the supplements ensures you are providing a diet that has enough vitamins to stay healthy. Potatoes and vegetable rarely can an allergic reaction in a dog, but certain grains can, if things are going good for you an one cooked diets, you can try adding rice and learn if that agrees with the dog, if it doesn't then you woulld know that any kibble that contain rice would not work for you, if that is fine later you could add oatmeal and see what happens
You may end up learning that wheat, chicken and rice cause problems by doing this way and any kibble you choose therefore can't contain those ingredient so looking at the Burns foods the only one that would work and not cause problems is the Pork and Potato formula.
Figure out what a dog is allergic to can be a long process and sometimes frustrating, Cooking yourself can make it easier to learn what ingredients can be causing, as you have full control of the ingredients and can add in just one at a time and know for sure if it just that ingredient causing the problem, when doing trials with kibbles it is often harder as they may have multiple different ingredients and if things get worse it makes it harder to isolate what ingredient is truly the problem , for many dogs they are allergic to one or two ingredients , but some can have several severe allergies and cooking[starting with only two ingredients(1 carb and 1 meat) and slowly adding others in] or actually going for allergy tests(expensive) is often the only way to learn what they are.

I have hear some amazing things people have found, when they switched, allergies gone, dog stopped eating it's poop, old dog getting more energy and spark back in their life.. It's worth a try, comes in tiny pieces and you can get the All Life Stages, that's good for everyone from puppy to senior.
Reply:Try a food called California Natural...available at specialty feed stores in the U.S. Not sure if it's available outside of this country, but it's worth checking for if you live somewhere else.
...and a trip to the vet wouldn't hurt, either.
Reply:Determining a food allergy is a game of elimination. Look a the top 5 ingredients in the food you're feeding, and then try a food for a few weeks (sometimes up to 12 weeks is required to eliminate the symptoms of the previous food) that has a completely different set of ingredients. Your dogs can be allergic to any one of the ingredients, wheat, corn, rice, soy, chicken, pork, beef, venison, anything. Just eliminate each ingredient until you find a combination that is right for your dog.
A quicker way to do this is to have your dog's allergy panel run, but be forewarned, it is costly. However, this panel will lay it out straight and tell you which food ingredients your dog is allergic to.
A word about the canned and moist diets - these are terrible for your dogs' teeth. They contain syrup and sugar that your dog can't naturally clean from its teeth. Feed a dry diet, quality dog food brands have everything in the dry kibble that your dog needs, nothing more nothing less. So unless you're willing to brush your dogs' teeth after every meal (which you should do anyway, even dogs on dry diets develop bad teeth), I would give up those canned diets.

Reply:See your vet and ask him - they will probably suggest Hills - they do on that is 'bland' for ill dogs, for example, and it is only sold in vets!.
However, the vet will make sure there is nothing wrong with either dog, before you go to the expense of changing the food.

Reply:Saw this on Oprah. The more natural the diet, the better. Find something low grains, high protein. Your dog is probably allergic to grains, not meat. Dogs are carnivores.

Reply:Well it depends on what your dog is allergic to. If it is a meat you are going to want to find a holistic dog food with one source of meat or many that do not include to allergen meat. If its wheat, corn, soy, etc...keep em on a holistic food! Burns can be very rich for some animals, same as innova and wellnes,, but all are great food. im wondering why the people who suggest holistic diets are being put as a thumbs down... natural ingredients with hormone free and anitbitoic free with no grains or soy or corn work wonders, science diet is crap it contains artificial preservatives...anything that is not holistic has harmful ingredients like byproducts.....your dog could be allergic to that. science diet will work for a while but your dog becomes immune to it. please go see a vet, get her checked out, see what she is allergic to and switch to a human grade HOLISTIC food, Eagle Pack and Wellness are the two products we use on our animals and recomend both at the animal hospital we work for and at the petstore i manage at.... Reply:I've never heard of shaking being a sign of allergies. I'm also not familiar with the food you mention. However, I wanted to say that although allergy testing isn't cheap (I paid $250), it's worth every single cent. Dogs can have multiple allergies and even to non-food items...it's realIy difficult to impossible to figure it out on your own. One of my dogs has 25 allergies and he's borderline for 6 more. I would never have guessed, his only sign is regular ear infections. Many of his are food related (he's on a special diet, b/c nearly all the popular "allergy" brands contain things he can't have), but some are to cotton, dust, some trees, some grasses, etc...things impossible to avoid. Although, reducing his exposure to as many as possible helps, a lot. I recommend making a vet appointment and explain to him/her what you're noticing. If he recommends the test, I would do it. Reply:Take the dog to be vet and have them figure out if your dog is allergic to some types of foods/ingredients. It may cost you some money, but think of all the money you'll be saving by figuring out what's wrong and then just buying the proper foods for him. Reply:its possible they are allergic to the stuff they mix with these days .. it could be wheat, or ash, ...try boiled chicken and rice (the rice helps with tummy problems and the chicken is a very light meat like fish) other than that call the vets
Reply:There are holistic meats on the market, Nature diet and nature menu are both hoistic and free from crap, tesco's have started stocking it now, you can also get your local pet shop to order it for you. Introduce dry food slowly to your dogs mixed with some wet food they are used to. Why not try making your own food or try them on a b.a.r.f. diet which is bones and raw food, no additives in this as it's a natural diet but research it first. You can buy green tripe from some butchers which is good food for dogs, but don't buy white as there is no nutritional value in it, you can get frozen tripe from most pet shops also. Canned dog food is one of the worst things to feed your dog unless it's organic as most are full of additives such as preservatives, flavourings and colours
Reply:you should probably make sure with your vet that it isn't something else, but i have a labrador and used to have a golden... both with severe allergies, i have always had success with Purina One lamb and vegetable or lamb and rice food, it took them a while for their hair to be normal but it finally is so i think it works... good luck.
Reply:pedigree...stop feeding any all treats. it takes 30-60 on a straight diet alone to see improvements. ask around your local area pet shops and customers and see what they say. if you are feeding wet foods, use the accompanying cans from the product. canned foods are only important if your animal has frequent uti's or something. dont buy grocery store brands...not a one or any treats from them.

My dog after going through various tests %26amp; being on a prescription diet from the vets is now on James Wellbelove Duck %26amp; rice kibble.
Look at the c..p that is in dog food its full of stuff we would not eat,the coluring is added to please the human eye.
