give him benadryl like one pill a day, or you can try giving him an oatmeal bath. But if you give him an oatmeal bath leave it on him for about ten minutes and then rinse it off.....

There are three things that can help:


Hydrocortison injections


Change in your dog's kibble, due to a food allergy.


And/or, using an Oatmeal shampoo when bathing.





The hydrocortison can relieve itchy skin and given annually can be a great help.


If you are feeding a kibble which has corn in it, that is the number one cause of skin allergies, along with beef.


I suggest using a kibble which has NO corn in it, such as Natural Balance.


The Oatmeal shampoo will soothe the skin, but it does not really take care of the issue as the above mentioned do.





Talk to your vet. He/She will know the best thing for your Golden.
Reply:My first piece of advice would be (if you haven't already) is change the food your dog is eating. Because that is a very common problem for owners feeding certain foods. Try and Lamb and Rice. Also, try a better food if that's an issue. Try Candiae, Nutro Ultra, Solid Gold. Something nutritional and your baby will benefit on two levels!





If this doesn't work speak with your vet, he/she may have some ideas as to how to help :)
Reply:I would recommend using a omega fatty acid supplement (basically fish oil pills) available everywhere. FA's are great at providing a clean shiny haircoat and ease inflammation associated with allergies. Bathing on a regular basis is a good thing as well but make sure you are rinsing well, especially in the feet and underside areas.
Reply:My dog aslo has this itching problem not due to fleas. She s a cocker. My groomer shampoos her in the oatmeal bath and it seems to help.
Reply:Try an oatmeal based shampoo or soap. It will most likely cut down on the itching. Have you ever thought about allergies. I know that some pets to have them. Call a groomer, check what they use, and ask if you can purchase the product, most groomers do sell pet products. Good Luck!

Reply:I would take her to the Vet. so he can get a skin scraping and check for mange. That would be my first step. Start out checking for the worst and work your way down. It could be some kind of contact dermatitis, allergy to grass or even galvanized metal.





It is best to find the cause first and then follow through with meds or eliminate the cause.





I have had two dogs with contact dermatitis. One was the galvanized fence she rubbed on a lot, the other I don't know what it is but he scratches a lot.

Reply:Try another food with no corn, wheat, soy, sorghum, or similar grains that carnivorous omnivores were not meant to eat. Brands like Purina, Pedigree, Science Diet, Eukanuba, Iams, etc are not suitable. Try foods like Chicken Soup, Innova, Canidae, The Honest Kitchen, Merrick, Dick van Patton's Natural Balance, etc. Then give your golden 2-4 fish oil capsules a day with 400 IUE of vitamin E. Every day alternate with a raw egg and a splash of olive oil on the food. I guarantee it will help.

Reply:I give my dog a Tablesppon of Olive Oil. Poured over his food. I use this for a up to a month and I usually see an improvement in the dryness and flakes.
Reply:I think that I would check with my vet first. It sounds like a food allergy to me. I have a Shih Tzu that had a very similar problem. Once I changed his food to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, he never had another problem.

Reply:Fleas are a major pest. There are various species of fleas - cat fleas, dog fleas, rat fleas and rabbit fleas.


You can get rid of them by the safest and cheapest methods like boric acid.
Reply:I recommend that you have allergy testing done to see what it is he is specifically allergic to. Also if you are feeding a food with corn, wheat or soy in it, switch to a better quality food that doesn't contain any of these cheap fillers.


Shampoos can actually make the problem worse..drying the skin and causing more itching.
